The announcement by Valve of new Steam hardware marks a continuation of Valve’s foray into the handheld and console market. This is probably the biggest shift since Sony entered the market with the PlayStation in 1994.
Valve is the dominant game store on PC. In 2022, they released the Steam Deck, a Linux-based handheld with access to users’ existing Steam libraries. A significant amount of work was placed into developing the Linux support layer to enable games to run on the Linux-based SteamOS.
By releasing a Steam Machine (not the ill fated 2015 version) with their own hardware and access to existing libraries,Valve has the opportunity to move PC gamers into the living room and move console gamers to another platform that has the majority of games available on it.
